Is BrainsWay Deep TMS Therapy Uncomfortable? Does it Hurt?
No, the most common side effect related to treatment was scalp discomfort during treatment sessions. This side effect was generally mild to moderate and occurred less frequently after the first week of treatment. If necessary, you can treat this discomfort with an over-the-counter analgesic. If these side effects persist, your doctor can temporarily reduce the strength of the magnetic field pulses being administered in order to make treatment more comfortable.
Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or Deep TMS, uses magnetic fields to regulate brain structures associated with mood disorders. During the treatment process, patients normally hear a tapping sound and feel some pressure over the treatment site, though these usually go away after several sessions. Deep TMS therapy side effects usually do not cause any persistent discomfort.
Is Deep TMS covered by my insurance?
Yes, Deep TMS coverage depends on the treatment type, geographical location, and insurance plan. In the United States, BrainsWay’s Deep TMS therapy is covered by Medicare and nearly all major private insurers to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). BrainsWay is actively seeking coverage for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment and smoking cessation, which, like MDD, are FDA-cleared.
Outside of the United States, the cost to patients for TMS treatment is variable, depending on the specific country and health coverage structure. Speak to your mental health provider or health insurer to better understand the costs that you would incur.

How does Does TMS work?
Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation, or Deep TMS™, is a unique, noninvasive treatment process developed by BrainsWay that helps alleviate symptoms related to mental health conditions. Currently, BrainsWay is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in the US, and is CE Marked for additional psychiatric and neurological conditions in Europe. During the Deep TMS process, an electromagnetic field is activated by BrainsWay’s patented H-Coil technology, which is held inside a helmet apparatus fitted over the patient’s head. The helmet safely sends out magnetic pulses that are able to directly reach deeper, broader brain structures, successfully influencing their neural activity.
